The fine-dining presentation used by Plum Organics (PO) on their packaging and website is quite enticing. That's why we were delighted to try four product samples from the company, which is one of the leading frozen organic baby food brands in the US.
Editor's Update July 2010:
Since writing this review in 2008 PO has discontinued it's frozen line of food and began making ready to eat purees and toddler snacks.
Pasta with Veggies & Chicken
This flavor is made for babies 9 months and up. It was surprisingly smooth and yummy for both of us. The organic ingredients include water, peas, wheat pasta, ground chicken, unsalted butter, onion puree, onion juice concentrate, carrot juice concentrate and celeriac juice concentrate. Talk about a well balanced meal.
Super Greens
This flavor (for babies 6 months and up) is made with organic peas, water, organic green beans and organic spinach. Spinach is the dominant flavor in this one, i.e. it's a great opportunity to train your baby's taste buds to love good green veggies.
Mango Muesli
At first, I wasn't so sure about this flavor (for babies 9 months and up) because I tasted it at room temperature. After we warmed it, all the ingredients blended together, making it a nice warm, fruity treat - kind of like hot applesauce, but more exotic. Yum!
It's made with all organic ingredients such as pureed mango, apples, quinoa, brown rice and oats. We also made some good fiber smoothies with this one.
Bowtie Pasta with Creamy Sweet Potato Sauce
This one is one of the new Plum Organics Kids Meals and it was our favorite. I didn't know you could make a pasta sauce with sweet potatoes and cream, but now I do. This one comes with a side of edamame, corn and red bell peppers.
The company's philosophy is to introduce babies to real tasting, flavorful food rather than starting out with bland foods. We agree and enjoyed eating them.
The Plum Organics line features some food combinations I wouldn't necessarily have thought of, but we like that. In fact, they have inspired us to incorporate some new nutritious staples into the meals that we make from scratch, such as edamame and sweet potato sauce.
The BPA-free cups are convenient for moms and babies that eat on the go. Each box of the baby food contains two 4 oz. plastic cups with a lid you can open and close as often as you like.
The toddler meals were also neat. All we had to do was peel the liner and pop it in the oven.
Plum Organics seems to have thought about child safety in its BPA-free packaging. They also seem to have incorporated the latest nutritional research into the development of their products. The more advanced meals have DHA, the nutrient that is key to brain and eye development.
As far as the environment goes, the boxes and the toddler tray are 100% biodegradable. Plum Organics also gives to some worthy causes such as Healthy Child Healthy World, which advocates for a non-toxic environment for our children.
The world of organic baby food is rich with diversity in flavors and good nutritional options. After trying Plum Organics baby food, we believe it's an integral part of that world and recommend their products for any baby or toddler transitioning to solid foods.
