The instructor passed around a lot of pre- and post-partum gadgets, but the name Hooter Hider grabbed my attention and stuck with me. The company website, says a male friend came up with the product name. However, as they grew, both the company and the product took on a more chic and politically correct name, Bebe Au Lait. They keep the name Hooter Hider out courtesy to the original following - I guess that includes me. I picked up my Hooter Hider from a small boutique a week after my baby was born and started using it right away. We had a fair share of company in our home the first few weeks and I wanted some privacy as I tried to get the baby to latch on. It kept me from having to relocate after every feeding. The product is simple, it's a piece of lightweight fabric, with a strap to go around your neck and a wire rim that protrudes up and over the bust line. The wire rim allows you and the baby to make eye contact, while keeping the feeding a private affair. Next to the wire rim, the second best feature is the choice of bright, fun patterns you have to choose from. Paisley, polka dots, florals, neutral solids - you get to choose whatever tickles your fancy. It also has a terry cloth pocket on the inside for wiping your baby's mouth and burping. One word of caution would be to practice gentle laundering with your cover. You may want to wash it on a gentle cycle and let it air dry. After a couple of laundry cycles, my wire rim started to droop. It would fall on my baby's face and reveal more than was desired. I tried to make it pop back up, but it just isn't as perky as it was when I first brought it home. My Recommendation: I have used the Hooter Hider for discreet feedings in restaurants, malls and parks. It has definitely made nursing a more pleasant and convenient experience. If you are at all apprehensive about nursing in public, the Hooter Hider will be well worth the $35 investment. Since I made the purchase, BeBe Au Lait has come out with organic linen and cotton covers. This appears to be a nice upgrade for an organic-minded mama!
