Budgeting for
Organic Nursery Bedding

You don't have to spend a fortune on organic nursery bedding. If you aren't ready to invest in an entire organic baby bedding set or mattress, you can start with one or two fitted organic crib sheets for your baby's crib and coordinate the crib skirt and other accessories in conventional cotton.

You should be able to get an organic baby sheet for about 10 percent of what you would pay for an entire set of organic cotton bedding. You may want to use the savings to invest in an organic baby mattress.

Do you want your baby to have custom organic bedding? If you or someone in your family sews, buy organic fabric and a pattern and ask them to make the baby crib bedding of your dreams.

If you can't find organic cotton fabric you like, natural baby bedding made of fibers such as cotton, wool or hemp (even if it is not organic) is better than bedding made from synthetic fabrics. Polyester and fleece are often finished with formaldehyde, ammonia and ethylene glycol.

Also don't limit yourself to the high-end boutiques when you shop Babies R US, Target, and other department stores are now offering organic nursery bedding at more economical pricing.

High value brands of organic crib bedding with comparatively lower pricing include Gerber and Under The Nile.

Getting an Organic Baby Mattress For Less

If you're willing to sacrifice aesthetics, buying an organic crib mattress without the quilting could save you between $80 and $100. This holds true with the Naturepedic brand of crib mattresses. No one will see it but the person changing the sheets.

You could also start with a natural mattress barrier, such as an organic mattress pad or cover. Organic wool or organic cotton are both good for keeping moisture and dust out of the mattress. They also help with insulation and serve to regulate body temperature.

Finally. if you already have a conventional mattress and are unable to make a change right away, let it and the rest of your baby bedding air out on a sunny day to get rid of some of the fumes.
