I am interested in adding more nutritive solid foods to my daughter's diet so I was excited to try the frozen HAPPYBABY ™ meals. Two flavors come in each box so we picked up all we could find at our grocery store.
Sweeter Potatoes and Purer Pear are straightforward, classic purees. While a small amount does liquefy upon thawing, the puree was not runny and did not taste watered-down. They were both yummy and tasted fresher than I expected.
I also like Grrreat Greens which blends organic pears, organic spinach, organic mango and DHA algal oil. It has a tangy sweet flavor and makes a perfect base for a green smoothie.
We also tried Easy Going Greens which is a blend of organic green beans, peas, brown rice and DHA algal oil. I expected this one to be chunky because of the rice, but it was smooth and all green. It had a fresh and healthy taste - the kind you want to train your baby to appreciate.
My daughter did like the Mama Grain Flavor which is a blend and of bananas, quinoa, black beans and DHA algal oil. However, I wasn't surprised because she loves bananas.
Finally we tried the Baby Dhal flavor which is made of organic lentils, potatoes, carrots, olive oil, cinnamon, coriander and DHA algal. I thought this one was a bit bland for my daughter (15 months), whose palate is used to more spices, but still I was impressed with the freshness. I plan on blending this one in with her pasta sauce to give it a nutritional boost.
Here's what I like about HAPPYBABY ™
Each package contains 12 frozen cubes in an "ice cube tray." If you tear along the perforations of the plastic film on top, you can unseal one cube (serving) at a time, without disturbing the others. To get the cube out, simply flip it over and push it out onto the serving dish to thaw. The food is no fuss and no mess.
Babies deserve fresh, healthy, good tasting food and so do the parents that raise them. I'm inspired to try to incorporate more organic fruits and veggies (in pureed and solid form) into more of our meals and snacks throughout the day.
Their website contains lots of suggestions to add more flavor and texture to the existing recipes such as adding fresh bananas to Mama Grain or adding one of the puree cubes to HAPPYBELLIES ™ cereal. We tried this and it makes for a more hearty and flavorful meal.
For every package of HAPPYBABY ™ purchased, the company is able to provide food for one child for one day in Malawi, through the charity, Project Peanut Butter.
Trial and error:
Not all of the products are available in the stores that carry this brand. I'm hoping to change this by putting in a request to the stores in my area. I plan to locate and try the HAPPYBITES ™ Toddler meals soon.
We don't microwave at our house, so I tried to quick thaw one of the cubes on the stove top. I may have needed to be more attentive, or use a dab of olive oil on my stainless steel pot, but some of the puree stuck to the bottom. I prefer to plan ahead and let the food thaw to room temperature on it's own. This takes about an hour.
My Recommendations:
HAPPYBABY ™ purees provide a tasty, nutritious start to an organic baby's solid diet.
It's apparent, from reading the HAPPYBABY ™ website and packaging, that their range of meals was designed to meet the many nutritional requirements of a growing baby and toddler - something that a lot of parents don't have time to map out on their own.
I recommend all of the flavors I tried and hope to be trying more soon.
