DoDeDa Organic Tees and Onesies

Performance Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I met one of the owners of DoDeDa in a baby forum and was delighted to discover their unique, organic baby tees and onesies made with a personal touch. If the name sounds foreign to you at first, it will all make sense when you meet the women behind the new, growing baby apparel company.

Their Story:

Dodeda Giraffe Shirt

You see Domenica (Do) and her two younger sisters, Deborah (De) and Daphne (Da), put their crafty minds together to come up with tees for babies and toddlers. Each piece of clothing showcases their photos of Homegrown produce and Homebaked goodies.

"Most of our homegrown designs are products that are harvested from our own backyards, also from family and friends and one or two from local farmers," said Domenica. "That's how we started this company, Deborah grew the most beautiful (so we all thought) tomato and took a picture of it (she is also a professional photographer)and we made t-shirts for our girls."

Domenica says they had lots of requests from friends which told them they were on to something. They have a blast coming up with new designs and often end up customizing orders for customers who want pictures of different vegetables or cookies.

They are also in the process of working on a new line of colored shirts for boys for December. Domenica sent us a DoDeDa shirt to sample and here's what we think:

Features to Love:

  • All shirts and onesies are made from 100% certified organic cotton and come in long and short sleeves.
  • The concept of the Homegrown line creates a great opportunity to help your baby identify healthy foods. Of course this could work the same with the Homebaked line's donuts and cookies, so consume in
    moderation :)
  • The DoDeDa prints are vivid and survive in the wash. The photo transfers on shirts are made from a Neenah Green-E Certified product.
  • No irritating tag in the neck line.
  • The tees run big, which can mean longer wear.
  • The shirts come in long and short sleeve and go up to toddler sizes.
  • The organic tees come with a removable seeded paper tag which blooms flowers when planted.
  • Colored shirts are dyed with environmentally friendly dyes

Room For Improvement:

  • I know the ladies are still working on their website. Right now it's a little hard to tell if you're ordering a tee or a onesie. However, all prints are available in onesies (6 mo, 12 mo and 18 mo) and T-shirts sizes (2T, 3T, 4T, 5/6).
  • At first glance I don't see much difference between the fabric on this shirt and a conventional t-shirt. It may be because I'm used to seeing the cotton on organic tees in the "natural" color state. I did inquire about the bleaching process and learned the shirts are whitened with Peroxide, the Global Organic Textile Standard, (G.O.T.S.) approved method for whitening organics.
  • Like most t-shirts, if you don't hang or fold immediately after pulling out of the dryer, you will be ironing.

The Bottom Line:

The story of three sisters combining their talents and life passion to build an eco-conscious business is as special as their product. I think this company is one to watch and support as they grow their homegrown passion into a big business.

DoDeDa's shirts are competitively priced at $24 each. You can find their shirts on their the company website as well as on Etsy.com.
