Diaper Rash Cream:
and Other Organic Treatmemts

Diaper rash cream can provide soothing relief to your baby's chaffed bum. However, many well-meaning parents overuse such remedies in the name of prevention; and some of the popular ointments contain chemicals that further irritate baby's skin.

Choose organic diaper rash cream.

Here are some tips to help you avoid those situations.

Choosing Diaper Rash Treatments

  • Parabens are a culprit in conventional diaper rash ointments.

Parabens have an estrogen-like effect and disrupt hormones. The common forms are methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl.

If you are pregnant or nursing, you should avoid skin care with parabens as well. They get into your skin and bloodstream and come out in urine and breast milk.

  • Other ingredients in common diaper rash creams include Sodium Borate (a major ingredient in roach poison) and Ceteareth 5 & 20; PEG 8.

Both have been found unsafe for infant skin as well as irritated or inflamed skin.

  • Get rid of the talc powder.

Not only does talc irritate your skin, but it has been linked to respiratory problems and ovarian cancer.

Baby powder used to be a standard part of diapering, but it is not essential for preventing or healing diaper rash.

If you must use powder, make sure to choose a talc-free version for yourself and your baby.

  • Certified Organic Diaper Rash Cream treats rashes without further irritating the skin.

We use the certified organic Baby Barrier Balm made by Miessence. The all-organic ingredients are blended into a balm that is light, non-greasy and easy to apply.

We have used this for a mild case of chaffed skin in the diaper area and it disappeared in a day's time. We also use carry it in our diaper bag for use as a lip balm in cold, winter months. The full review of the diaper balm is here.

I've also reviewed and recommend the certified organic diaper cream by Nature's Paradise. It is made with organic soy bean oil, sunflower oil and shea butter. This light ointment has multiple uses as well.

Preventing Baby Diaper Rash

  • The best prevention for diaper rash is fresh air.

When it's practical, allow your baby time to go diaper free. Your baby will appreciate even a few moments a day of airing out.

  • Frequent diaper changes (every couple of hours) also does wonders in preventing rashes.

If you are away from your baby during the day and notice reoccurring diaper rash, talk to your day care provider about changing your baby more often.

  • Make sure the wipes you use aren't causing your baby's diaper rash.

You can find organic versions of the conventional wipes as well as organic cotton or hemp reusable wipes.

Or skip the wipes altogether and use a diaper area wash spray and an organic cotton wash cloth in between diaper changes.

  • The diapers themselves can be culprits too.

If your baby has sensitive skin. The gels, fragrance, and chlorine in conventional diapers can irritate the skin and cause a diaper rash. Explore your options in chlorine free disposables and organic diapers to prevent further irritation.

  • Finally, diaper rash ointment should be used for healing, not prevention.

This will save you money and keep your baby's bum dry - so his skin can breathe.
