Lots of factors go into your baby formula choice and as a mom you want to choose the best available. In a previous post, I talked about the benefits of choosing dairy over soy formula if it all possible. I’ve also written about the benefits of choosing baby formula that does not use the hexane method to provide DHA and ARA. Here are three more tips for choosing a the best baby formula:
- Choose Organic
By choosing a formula that is USDA certified organic, you avoid exposing your baby to chemical insecticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, fertilizers, steroids and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in your baby’s formula. From the time they are conceived until they are one year old, babies are most vulnerable to the effects of toxins in their milk and food.
- Avoid CarrageenanIn addition to choosing an organic formula to avoid pesticides I like to choose a formula that does not include Carrageenan, a known inflammatory agent, used to test anti-inflammatory abilities of pharmaceutical drugs.
- Avoid Processed Refined Sweeteners This includes corn syrup (glucose) solids, maltodextrin and brown rice syrup containing detectable levels of arsenic. Lactose is ideal and is the carbohydrate that naturally occurs in breast milk.
