I've reviewed the Bebe au Lait nursing cover (also known as the Hooter Hider) and have enthusiastically recommended this product. The cover can be a life saver for nursing moms on the go and for moms who want a little privacy at the hospital or at home when guests come to visit the new baby.
I recently had the opportunity to review their Simple organic line, which includes organic nursing covers and burp cloths. While the products function the same, I wondered if there was truly a difference between the original and the organic version of the products and if they were worth the premium. Here's what I think:
The Bebe Au Lait organic cover uses 100% certified organic cotton and is dyed using eco-friendly dyes. This eliminates the possibility of your newborn having skin and respiratory contact with pesticides and toxic dyes.
The organic burp cloths are thick and super soft. They are made from 100% certified organic cotton terry. The cotton is also unbleached.
The breastfeeding cover also comes in 100% organic linen. Organic linen is easier to produce since it naturally doesn't attract as many pests. It is also non-allergenic, antibacterial and allows the skin to breathe. Linen is also said to be able to withstand a lot more washings than cotton, last a lot longer and hold more moisture. That said, you probably will have to break out the iron if you go with this option.
I understand that the concept is to keep the organic line Simple, but I would love to see patterns (not just solid colors) available in the organic pattern.
Initially, I don't notice any difference in the feel of the organic fabric and the conventional one. Perhaps the difference will show in the long-term, wear and durability of the cover after many washes. However, my original cover is still functional and in one piece after two years.
Breastfeeding is one of the best things you can do for your new baby and arming yourself with tools to support your decision beforehand will increase your likelihood of continuing to do so longer. Yes, you could use a blanket to cover up if you needed to, but blankets don't allow for eye contact and they sometimes slide down or are pulled down by baby.
But does it have to be organic? Of course not, but if you are able to vote, with your dollars for a farming process that is sustainable and for baby apparel that is free of harmful dyes and fabric finishes, then why not spend the extra $5?
Also it appears that the best deal is the gift set, which contains the BeBe Au Lait organic nursing cover and burp cloths because you only pay the extra $5 once and the products bundled together are slightly cheaper anyway.
