Organic Baby News, Issue #009 -- Detoxifying Your Baby's Home
January 12, 2009
Hello,

Organic Baby News is the free, monthly newsletter distributed by Organic Resource, the practical guide to organic baby care.

Happy New Year! The theme this month is Organic Baby's Home. At the start of the new year, your family's health is probably top of mind. You're probably also thinking about things you want to do around your home to spruce it up.

Did you know the materials and cleaning supplies you use around your home can have an impact on your family's health? This month's issue will point you to some resources to help you get rid of the unnecessary that lurk in your baby's home environment.

In This Issue:

Organic Baby Business of The Month

The Organic Baby Business of the Month is Healthy Child Healthy World (HCHW), a national nonprofit organization that exists to protect the health and well being of children from harmful environmental exposures.

Originally called the Colette Chuda Environmental Fund (CCEF), the organization was founded by parents Nancy and Jim Chuda to fund research that would identify the cause of the type of childhood cancers that took the life of their daughter Colette.

Since 1991, the organization has been working to educate parents, advocate policies, and engage communities in making everyday choices that will improve the quality of life for children.

A Wealth of Information

Today HCHW has become one of the leading resources for parents who want to create a home that is free of the hidden toxins found in pesticides, pool chemicals, carpet cleaners, lawn care products (and everything else you have or haven't thought of yet.)

At the top of my goal list this year is improving the quality of health of my family. My action steps include a commitment to a healthy and organic diet, exercise and ridding my home of as many toxins as I can without breaking the bank.

In the spirit of sharing, here are five great resources I found on the HCHW website to help detoxify your baby's home.

  1. Checklists. No need to overwhelm yourself, by trying to eradicate toxins from the entire house at once. However, as you're ready to tackle an issue, for example pest control. You can use the checklist to green your way into a healthier solution.

  2. Green Your Home Building Materials Guide will help the family who is building, moving or renovating this year choose sustainable, less hazardous materials.

  3. Green Your Home In Home Materials is a quick list of everyday products that can be replaced around the home over the course of the year.

  4. Health ehouse allows you to identify potential home hazards with a virtual home tour and interactive quiz.

  5. Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home.

I was given this book by board member and singer, songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman. It is a great resource written by the group's CEO, Christopher Gavigan. If you are looking for a guide that sums up the environmental impact of your parenting decisions, this book will get you up to speed in no time.

Like most nonprofit corporations, Healthy Child Healthy World is supported by the generosity of foundations, individuals and corporations. To learn more about this organization and how you or your business can get involved, visit their website.
