Organic Baby Business of The Month

What are you most thankful for this week?

In light of the economic downturn many of us are facing, I am most thankful to have a home and the ability to provide my daughter with nutritious meals when she needs them. I confess I have taken such precious gifts for granted on many occasions, but lately I've been reminded that not everyone has the luxury of having their basic needs met.

From our friends at HappyBaby, we learned about Project Peanut Butter (PPB), a charitable organization that provides meals and nutritional assessments for children in Malawi and Sierra Leone, two African countries with some of the highest child mortality rates in the world.

PPB, founded by by Professor Mark Manary, M.D., a pediatrician at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and a professor of pediatric medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, operates therapeutic feeding factories in the two developing countries.

RUTF: A Powerful Ally Against Malnutrition

PPB is unique, because it combats the problem of malnutrition with a secret weapon - peanut-based Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF).

RUTF is a paste similar to commercial peanut butter, but with added vitamin, minerals, powdered milk, vegetable oil and sugar. Dr. Manary was the first to conduct clinical trials with the solution, which is now endorsed by the World Health Organization and the World Food Programme as the standard of treatment for severely malnourished children worldwide.

According to PPB, 95% of malnourished children recover from malnutrition after using the RUTF solution for six to eight weeks. The stats are equally impressive for children maintaining the recovery over six to twelve months, and it is estimated that nearly 200,000 children were treated with RUTF last year.

Other benefits are the fact that it requires no cooking or refrigeration and each child's treatment costs only $15.

But how does one organization have such a big impact?

In addition to operating the factories, they send out medical teams to rural villages who will stay for two week intervals until recovery occurs. They also train local health service workers to assess pediatric malnutrition levels, encourage local participation and assist teams of medical professionals on site visits.

PPB also supports the efforts of UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation and numerous other relief organizations by making RUTF available at cost for provision to thousands of additional severely malnourished children on the African continent.

Thanksgiving Feast for Baby - Tips for a Happy Feast

If you're cooking for Thanksgiving, you are probably overloaded with special requests and dietary considerations, but did you know there certain holiday goodies that may not be a good idea for your baby or toddler to sample just yet?

  • Cranberry Sauce, made of cranberries, might be too acidic for your little one. One bite might not do any harm, but a full serving could cause a rash in the mouth or upset your little one's tummy. In general, cranberries should be avoided before 9 months.

  • Gravy made from meat drippings, starches and other mystery ingredients could leave your baby with an upset stomach and you with a big mess to clean up (both during and after dinner).

  • Pumpkin Pie or Sweet Potato Pie typically contain whole eggs and milk. As long as your baby is not allergic, baked goods containing these ingredients are generally fine for babies 8 months and older. However you may want to consult with your physician to be sure.

If you want to give your baby a special Thanksgiving treat, but are avoiding dairy, sugar and other starches in your baby's diet, Check out these baby-friendly alternatives to apple pie, pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie from Wholesome Baby Food.
