Organic Baby Business of the Month:
Spunky Sprout Co.
Each month we highlight organic business owners that make the world a better place for babies. Our goal is to put the spotlight on a nonprofit or for profit company that in some way helps babies and children achieve their birthright - a healthy start in life.
Spunky Sprout Co. is an online boutique that offers modern, eco-friendly, one-stop shopping for spunky babies and their spunky mamas. The company was founded by two sisters, Joli and Toni Williams, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
The idea to open their online store came when Toni, a mom of two children, had trouble finding nursery products to fit her modern style. After compiling research and creating the nursery of her dreams, she and her sister decided to fuse their favorite products into one shop and thus Spunky Sprout was born.
"I was 8 months pregnant with my son in April of 2007. I had studied architecture and always had a passion for modern design. I yearned to find children's products that matched my aesthetics, but I was so I was so disappointed with what I could find. My sister, Joli had a business background and suggested we start the store. It was only a matter of time before the idea materialized." said Toni.
In addition to selling baby clothing, furniture and toys made by other manufacturers, Spunky Sprout Co. makes their own line of organic cotton tees. The tees, made with with low impact dyes, come in orange, fuchsia, green and blue.
Each tee features a character who is appropriately named after a sprout. Here is what Toni had to say about them:
- Galfalfa (named after the Alfalfa sprout) is always eager and very lively. Her favorite things to do are chasing butterflies and dancing in the wind. She also has a beautiful voice with which she loves to entertain her friends.
Barleyna (named after Barley) is super adventurous and loves the water. She enjoys hikes to the pond and takes pleasure in swimming and exploring the water. Barleyna always organizes water games with her friends.
Azuki (named after Adzuki) is fun loving and optimistic. He has an amazingly positive outlook on life and is full of enterprise, energy and versatility. Azuki has a great sense of humor and loves to tell jokes with his friends.
Ryelee (named after Rye) is happiest when teaching his friends to have fun in ways that are secure for them and their environment.
As if the tees weren't special enough, Spunky Sprout donates 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each tee to Reach the Children.
Reach the Children, Inc. is a non profit organization that aims to empower underprivileged children in Africa. The charity does this by strengthening their families and communities with programs that emphasize AIDS Prevention, Education, Orphan Care, Water & Agriculture, Health and Micro Enterprise.
With so many charities to choose from, Toni and her sister selected Reach the Children because the organization's staff and volunteers were so passionate about the work they were doing for the children. Their enthusiasm made the sisters want to do what they could.
"The shirts retail for $6, so we have not raised tons of money, but we are committed to help in some way. We have raised a couple thousand in the few months we have been selling the tees. We are a small company and it feels good to be able to do that," said Toni.
Toni and her sister hope to continue selling the shirts for the life of the business and they will create new designs once they sell out of the current tees. In fact, they are already sold out of the body suits shown in the photo.
If you are wondering how a few dollars could impact the lives of these children, here are a few examples from Reach the Children's website.
- $3 pays for a mosquito net for one child.
- $5 pays a nurse's salary for one day at a clinic.
- $6 pays for a pair of shoes for a child.
Toni and Joli's commitment to helping others seems to be working for their "sprouting" business. They are preparing for the opening of a retail space in Ft. Lauderdale in the fall of 2008.
