Organic Baby Business of the Month: Dr. Susanna's World Baby Foods, LLC

Starting this month, we will highlight organic businesses that make the world a better place for babies. Each month we will introduce you to a nonprofit or for profit company that in some way helps babies achieve their birthright - a healthy start in life.

The Organic Baby Business of the month is Dr. Susanna's World Baby Foods, LLC. The organic baby food company showcases purees with popular flavors from around the world. Without packing one suitcase, you can take your baby on a world cuisine tour to Tahiti, Thailand, India, Japan and Eastern Europe.

"We chose a multicultural theme because it allows us to develop a fun and tasty line of baby foods that fulfills our mission to educate children how to eat. In addition, cuisine is a great way to experience culture. When a baby tastes curry, for example, they just experienced a profound aspect of Indian tradition," said Susanna Block, MD on the company's website. "The children of today, raised on the foods of the world, will become the world citizens of tomorrow."

Dr. Susanna, a pediatrician, co-founded the company in 2006 with her husband Jonathan Scheffer, MD, a family medicine doctor.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Jonathan about the company's mission and he explained that their top priority was addressing a public health issue: children need to learn to eat and appreciate a well-balanced diet with a variety of foods.

"If we accomplish the improved nutrition of babies," he said "children will grow up with less pediatric issues like obesity and diabetes."

Jonathan said they aim to achieve their goal by dispelling the myth that baby food needs to be bland.

"When we feed babies foods without flavors, we are teaching them to like foods without flavors. Unfortunately this leads to children only wanting to eat macaroni and cheese when they get older," said Jonathan.

"By consistently introducing flavors to children - even after they turn them away a few times, they can eventually take a liking to the food that is healthy for them. In other words, parents have the ability to train the taste buds by giving them flavorful foods."

Jonathan went on to say meals are about more than the mechanics of eating.

"Food is a cultural, spiritual and developmental experience."

World Baby Foods comes in six organic flavors for parents who want a head start on raising globally-minded citizens: Baby Borscht, Baby Dal, Lullaby Thai, Que Pasa Calabasa, Sweetie Tahiti and Tokyo Tum Tum.

Based out of Seattle, the company obtained it's organic certification through the Washington State Department of Agriculture. World Baby Foods is available in stores in Washington and California and they hope to expand to New York in 2010.

However, through their website, the food can be ordered and delivered to your doorstep. Visit them to learn more about their growing company.

Product Review of The Month:
Medela Breast Pump

I am a fan of the Medela breast pump. It has been a faithful friend when I need to prepare for outings away from my daughter. I've had no mechanical problems and love the fact that all of the parts that come in contact with the breast milk are BPA-free.
